Why Should I Tune New Skis?

While skis may come from the factory looking ready to ride, a pre-tune delivers consistent base and edge angles to optimize your control on the snow. When you purchase new skis at Dinardo's Ski Bike Hike, we include a special new ski tune to ensure your equipment is dialed in right from day one.

The Factory Assembly Line is Often Inconsistent

Factory grinding machines struggle with the 3D curves of a ski, often leaving those details to be finished in-store. Because skis are ground in high volume, base and edge angles vary from pair to pair, meaning no two sets come out identical. Common factory inconsistencies include:

Wax: Protection and Performance

Ski bases are made of porous plastic (P-tex). While new skis arrive with a thin coat of factory wax meant only for shipping and storage, they require a thorough hot wax to penetrate and fill the P-tex pores. Without it, the bases risk drying out and oxidizing. Hot waxing seals out moisture, reduces friction on the snow, and keeps your bases healthy.

What Does a Pre-Tune Involve?

A professional pre-tune verifies and corrects base flatness, evens out the edges, and lightly detunes the tips and tails so the skis don't feel grabby when initiating turns. Finally, it finishes with a hot wax and structure to ensure your equipment is fully dialed in and ready for the slopes.

The Bottom Line

Factory-fresh skis are good, but rarely perfect. A pre-tune before their first run protects the base, perfects the edges, and unlocks the true performance your skis were built to deliver.
